The appeal record tells the story
In many contested matters, the appeal is affected by what was said earlier, what was not said earlier, and what the department has recorded in the order. Reading only the final order can miss important context.
Chronology is not clerical work
A good chronology can reveal missed procedural steps, inconsistent reasoning, limitation questions, or gaps between allegation and evidence. It also keeps drafting disciplined.
Documents to organise first
- The original notice and all annexures.
- The reply and any earlier written submissions.
- The order under review and proof of receipt.
- Working papers, returns, reconciliations, and documents relied on by either side.
Next step
Where an appeal is being considered, the first task is usually to understand the record before choosing the line of challenge.
